It doesn't take an internet marketing genius to recognize that a website's content and subject matter can bring a fluctuation in search engine traffic merely based on what time of year it is. Obviously if it's Christmas time then one can assume that a website related to holiday subject matter will see a dramatic increase in traffic. Simply because at that particular time there's a fluctuation in people searching for that relative subject matter.

The same assumption can be applied for any other specific holiday. However without dwelling on specific holidays, how might a season potentially boost your traffic? The same methods have been adopted and employed by marketing companies for as long as they've been around to effectively market their goods. You can apply the same techniques to your website content and reap the same benefits, but in search engine traffic!

A good way to introduce yourself to this idea is to walk over and pick up a paper, or a recent catalog of some sort. Notice the relation in what's being offered to what's associated with the current season? There's a reason they have Fall sales, Winter blow-outs, Spring clearance, and Summer savings, right? Pay attention to what's being offered in the relation to the season. If it's Winter than chances are you're seeing heavy coats and space heaters. If it's Summer, then it's beach towels and tanning lotion. You get the idea.

Now in a moment of self reflection take a moment to analyze your own searching habits in relation to the season. Chances are that you can identify at least one search you performed for information or goods that directly relate to that. How do you think the people that own the site's you visited enjoy the boost in traffic your search provided? That's right...

Now you may be sitting there thinking that your website, or your business for that matter. Has absolutely nothing to do with any particular season. What help is any of this if you're an all year-round outfit, and you don't think any of this can be helpful in your particular situation? Well the important thing to remember is that your success revolves around the people who provide you patronage. They are effected by the seasons just like you and I.


No matter which stance you take, you have to take the initiative of making what you offer as easy to find as possible. That's the entire basic fundamental fact of search engine optimization. So ask yourself some questions for examples based on your own habits.


  • Identify what keywords, or keyphrases, based on what's being offered most easily and plainly describe what you're offering and try to favor them within your content. example: If you have a sell beach sandals, what might land you at your site if someone was searching for "summer beach wear", or "sun bathing spots", or other spin off frequent searches for summer might bring.

  • It's an awesome excuse to solicit traffic, whether it be from existing users or new visitor traffic. There's a reason large stores offer quarterly catalogs and base their content around the season. If you were to add some related information to a newsletter or email campaign to give attention to a persons immediate interests than 9 times out of 10 your solicitation for business will be much better received and not as easily discarded.

  • If you have a blog, write something relative to the season, each season. Saturate your postings with targeted keywords and phrases you've identified to optimize the search listings result. (This doesn't mean go fill a page with a bunch of nonsense overly using said keywords and phrases. That will end up actually hurting your efforts.)

  • Take a tip from google who has become known for their ever original changing logo's for every special holiday, event, and season you can imagine. Apply this approach elsewhere than just a logo and establish a personal appeal. This allows your visitor another facet for which they can relate to your website. Subconsciously creating a better click-through-rate (CTR) from with your pages boosting page impressions and optimizing exposure as they browse your site more.

Think about quarterly analyzing your website's content just to see if anything stands out which may potentially target the type of traffic from which you might benefit for the season at hand.
